Tel Aviv –
Shocking news came from Israel. Prime Minister Israel Benjamin Netanyahu fires Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to remove Defense Minister Yoav Gallant from his position,” the Israeli prime minister’s office said ReutersMonday (27/3/2023).
Gallant is known to be a member of parliament from the Likud party, Netanyahu’s right-wing party. Gallant has publicly rejected the planned judicial overhaul initiated by the Netanyahu government.
Apart from Gallant, protests over the judicial overhaul have occurred across the land of Israel. Critics say the reshuffle will weaken the Supreme Court.
In a statement on Thursday (23/3) local time, Netanyahu said he was setting aside all other considerations and would do “whatever is necessary” to reach a solution.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets recently to protest against the planned judicial overhaul. The situation has worried business circles and opened a rift in Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition.
Not only among civil society, protests against the reshuffle also spread to the military. A report by Israel’s Channel 12 television said that after Netanyahu’s speech, some 200 elite reserve pilots in the Israeli Air Force resigned from duty on Friday (24/3).
