Military personnel have to work via WhatsApp, among other things, and there is a delay in, among other things, entering certain performances and requests for leave. Especially staff who work from home experience difficulties. “Waiting staff are currently receiving their orders via WhatsApp or Messenger. That is of course not a worthy alternative,” says Yves Huwart of the ACMP union.
There is only an impact on civilian applications (such as mail traffic) and not on critical military applications. The unions have criticized the lack of clear communication about the attack. “There has been communication that there has been no impact at the operational level, for example on F-16s. But so far we have no confirmation that there have been no other information leaks,” said Dimitry Modaert.
According to Huwart, the top of the army is dependent on the capacity of computer scientists. “They are increasingly scarce. We have an acute shortage of specialists there. Everyone wants things to progress, but we don’t have the capacity.” The fact that things are going so slowly is partly due to the fact that each individual server had to be disinfected.
