No man has won the US Open two years in a row since 2008. This year, Novak Djokovic bears that burden.

Roger Federer defended his US Open title in 2008 – as the last man

Novak Djokovic was asked at his press conference on Saturday what he had to do to end the long stretch in which no player had managed to defend the singles title at the US Open. Well – what if he won the title, Djokovic answered very pragmatically. But he immediately added that he was also not aware that Roger Federer was the last successful previous year’s winner in Flushing Meadows in 2008.

Federer himself lost the following year in the final against Juan Martin del Potro. In 2010, Rafael Nadal followed suit by winning his first title in New York. The possible title defense was thwarted in the final by Novak Djokovic – who in turn lost the final against Andy Murray twelve months later.

Djokovic had no explanation for this phenomenon. There was no such great fluctuation in the other three majors. At the Australian Open and Wimbledon, the Serbian grandmaster himself had his hand on the winner’s trophy more often. And at Roland-Garros, the same was true for Rafael Nadal.

The situation is very similar for the women. The last time she defended her title was in 2014. Back then, Serena Williams celebrated her third consecutive victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium. It would be her last.
