Mike Verweij defends Steijn: ‘Who says he doesn’t spend every evening in Ibiza…’

Mike Verweij came to the rescue for Ajax coach Maurice Steijn on Tuesday afternoon. Steijn is currently said to be staying on the Spanish island of Ibiza and that goes down the wrong way with many supporters.
“I would like to say something about that,” Verweij kicks off in Kick-off, the football podcast of De Telegraaf. “A lot of people fall for that and it is indeed unwise to sit there for the sake of image.”

“On the other hand, many clubs give their players and staff three or four days off,” Verweij defends Ajax’s selector. “If you always go to Ibiza, then I think it should be possible to go now.”
“Moreover, who tells me that he is not studying images of FC Utrecht every evening? I think that too much of a point is being made of it,” concludes the Ajax watcher.
Verweij does not think that Steijn will finish the season at Ajax, but says that it is ‘nonsense’ to judge him for this. Valentijn Driessen agrees with his colleague’s analysis.
“He has been working with Ajax 24 hours a day for the past 3 months. He has had to deal with one setback after another. Maybe it would also be nice to get some fresh air in Ibiza. We could use that too.”
Next Sunday, Ajax will take on FC Utrecht in De Galgenwaard at 12:15 p.m. The Europa League match against Brighton & Hove Albion is then scheduled for Thursday in England.
