Defending champions Real Madrid surprisingly make a mistake in Lille

Defending champion Real Madrid made a surprising mistake in the Champions League. The Spanish top club around national defender Antonio Rüdiger lost 0-1 (0-1) at OSC Lille on matchday 2 and suffered their first competitive defeat since January. Real will host Borussia Dortmund in a repeat of the previous season’s final on October 22nd.

Canadian Jonathan David gave the hosts from northern France the lead with a hand penalty in stoppage time in the first half. The substitution of France’s superstar Kylian Mbappé after 57 minutes didn’t help the royals either.

Liverpool FC got their second win in the second game. Coach Jürgen Klopp’s former team won 2-0 (1-0) against the Italian club FC Bologna. Argentine world champion Alexis Mac Allister (11th) and goalscorer Mohamed Salah (75th) scored. However, Bologna had numerous top opportunities. The Reds will be visiting RB Leipzig in the next match on October 23rd.

Atalanta Bergamo won the Champions League comfortably at the FC Schalke stadium.

Benfica Lisbon, with a good joker Jan-Niklas Beste, clearly defeated Atletico Madrid and coach Diego Simeone 4-0 (1-0) and remains unbeaten in the new Champions League season. After the opening coup against FC Barcelona (2:1), AS Monaco only managed a 2:2 (0:1) draw at Dinamo Zagreb. FC Brugge won with a goal from former Düsseldorf player Christos Tzolis at Sturm Graz (23rd).

Leverkusen shock Ademola Lookman gave Shakhtar Donetsk a lesson in their first Champions League home game at the FC Schalke 04 stadium. The star of the Italian first division soccer team Atalanta Bergamo led the Europa League winners to a well-deserved 3-0 (2-0) win with a goal and an assist.

The ex-Leipzig lookman, who scored all the goals in Bergamo’s 3-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen in the last Europa League final, prepared the 1-0 goal through Berat Djimsiti (27th minute). Shortly before the break he scored the second goal after a pass from former Schalke player Sead Kolasinac. Raoul Bellanova increased the score to 3-0 after the break (48′).
