With a win against record world champions Canada at the Ice Hockey World Championships, Switzerland has moved to the top of preliminary round group A. The Swiss defeated the Canadians 6:3 (3:3 1:0 2:0) in a high-quality game in Helsinki on Saturday and celebrated their fifth win in five games.
For Canada it was the first defeat in the fifth game. Both teams have already qualified for the quarter-finals, as has third-placed Germany. In the final games, all three nations still have the opportunity to win the group.
Denmark saved their chance of reaching the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over France. KAC goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm saved all 19 shots on goal by the French.
USA defeat Sweden
In Group B in Tampere it was Sweden’s first defeat in the fifth game. The “Dreikronen” team lost against the USA 2:3 after extra time and remains second in Austria’s Group B behind hosts Finland.
Adam Gaudette, who also scored to make it 1-1 (8th), decided the game in extra time. Nate Schmidt contributed the USA’s third goal. Rasmus Dahlin (3rd) and Carl Grundstrom (47th) scored for Sweden.
