Ederson defend Jordan Pickford about the incident with Virgil van Dijk. The Manchester City goalkeeper compared to when he was hit Sadio Mane.
Pickford crashed into Van Dijk in an Everton vs Liverpool match in the Premier League last month. The incident occurred when the Liverpool defender tried to grab the ball in the Everton penalty box.
As a result of Pickford’s attack, Van Dijk suffered a severe knee injury and had to undergo knee surgery. The Dutch defender is not expected to play again for the rest of this season.
Commenting on the incident, Ederson believed Pickford had no intention of injuring Van Dijk. The Brazilian goalkeeper then mentioned a similar incident he had against Liverpool in 2017.

At that time, Ederson was hit by Mane who was trying to catch a hull ball. Mane’s leg hit Ederson’s face, which then fell. The Liverpool player then received an immediate red card because he was deemed to have raised his leg too high.
“First, I don’t think there are players who come on to the field with the intention of injuring an opponent,” Ederson said as quoted Mirror.
“Sometimes you have a split second to make a decision. Unfortunately, Jordan Pickford collided with Van Dijk and ended up with a serious injury. It’s part of football, sometimes it happens. It can happen to anyone.”
“I don’t think Pickford intended to injure Van Dijk and neither do I think Mane intended to do it when he collided with me in a match a few years ago. You have so little time to make a decision and it can happen to any of us,” said Ederson .
