Defective airbags and tires: Ford recalls 275,000 vehicles in Canada

Ford is carrying out two safety recalls affecting more than 2.6 million vehicles in North America, including nearly 275,000 in Canada, mainly due to airbag problems.

One of the recalls concerns airbags manufactured by Takata for use by drivers of Ford Fusion 2006-12, Ford Edge 2007-10, Ford Ranger 2007-11, Mercury Milan 2006-11, Lincoln Zephyr / MKZ 2006-12 and Lincoln MKX 2007-10.

The bags contain a propellant that absorbs calcium sulfate and can degrade after prolonged exposure to humidity and high temperatures, which can cause them to rupture when deployed.

While the defect could result in injury or even death, Ford says it has not been made aware of any rupture so far.

The automaker disputed the merits of the recall, but the US Federal Highway Safety Agency urged it to proceed.

The second recall concerns 19 Continental brand tires, which can suddenly lose air or their tread after a breakage in their sidewall.

The recall involves 15,769 vehicles in the United States, 3,082 in Canada and 138 in Mexico, including certain 2018-2020 Ford F-250 and F-350, 2018 F-150 and 2019 Ford Escape
