Excelsior Women lost 3-1 to PEC Zwolle on Saturday afternoon. This was the eighth defeat in ten away games at Sportpark De Vegtlust (only at AZ and Telstar was there a draw).
Quick catch up
Without the injured Lieve van Vliet and the suspended Rachel Kleine, PEC Zwolle managed to score quickly. In the sixth minute Naomi Hilhorst gave a long ball to Bo van Egmond. She tapped the ball over the outcoming Isa Pothof, 1-0. A bigger deficit was prevented a minute later. Pothof saved a shot from Sophie van Vugt and Van Vugt shot over on the rebound.
Equalizer
In the 21st minute, Excelsior disrupted the Zwolle ladies’ build-up and Veerle van Spijk tried from just outside the center circle. Her attempt just missed the target. The next mistake at PEC Zwolle was punished. Goalkeeper Jasmijn Dijsselhof played Tara te Wierik unluckily. Lynn Groenewegen stole the ball from her and from about thirty meters Groenewegen shot over Dijsselhof into the empty goal: 1-1.
Isa Pothof prevents a bigger defeat
In the second half, Excelsior again quickly fell behind: from a corner kick, Bo van Egmond was able to score the 2-1 score in the 50th minute. Shortly afterwards, the Zwolle team hit the crossbar and in the remainder of the second half, Isa Pothof kept Excelsior on its feet several times with some excellent saves. Ultimately it was substitute Evi Maatman who made the score 3-1 in the last minute of the match.
Upcoming home games
Due to the fourth defeat in a row and the surprising victory of scHeerenveen over champion Ajax, Excelsior has fallen to the last place in the rankings. To avoid this place as a final ranking, Excelsior must achieve results in the coming matches against Fortuna Sittard and ADO Den Haag in its own Van Donge & De Roo Stadium. However, the next match is not a competition match but the match in the semi-finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup. Excelsior will compete against the women of Fortuna Sittard in their own stadium on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Kick-off is at 7:30 PM.
