(…) In high school I turned so hard on some Dutch production that since then I have actually only read and listened to imports.
I also suffered from that for a long time. As a result, from my 17th to about my 30th I read hardly any Dutch (so Dutch and Flemish!) Literature.
At one point I once got a book from Harry Mulisch, ‘Siegfried’, which had been on my bedside table for a while before I started in it. I thought that was a good book. Then I first read part of Mulisch’s oeuvre and then started to (re) discover other Dutch-speaking writers.
There is a lot of good Dutch literature, only you are beaten with it in high school by the compulsory list reading. As a result, many people do not feel like grabbing a Dutch book for fun after their final exam. It is a kind of cliché that between your 15th and 30th, say, you hate Dutch books and only start to appreciate them later. At least that was the case with me.
Incidentally, I still like to read in English, including translations from other languages (Japanese, Russian, etc.). However good they are, I find it a little less enjoyable to read in Dutch, for one reason or another
