Hannover – The number of Ukrainian students in Lower Saxony has decreased since spring. In June, 17,347 children and young people who had fled Ukraine were taught at public general schools in the country, as the Ministry of Education in Hanover announced in response to a dpa request. In mid-March there were 20,810 schoolchildren. The number of Ukrainian students at public vocational schools also fell from 1,420 in March to 1,390 at the end of June.
According to the ministry, the state of Lower Saxony currently employs around 350 people from Ukraine as educational staff. Around 30 refugees were employed as teachers. In addition, the school authorities – i.e. the municipalities – have also employed Ukrainians. For example, the city of Hanover has specially trained Russian and Ukrainian speakers to become intercultural educational assistants for the pupils who have fled.
