Decrease in Bluetongue Infections on Dutch Farms: PCR vs. Clinically Positive Cases

The number of new farms where bluetongue is detected in the Netherlands is decreasing somewhat. Between November 15 and 22, 196 locations with bluetongue were added, according to figures from the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. Between November 8 and 15, there were 620 new reports of bluetongue. The total number of locations with infections was 5,593 on Wednesday, November 22.

The number of 5,593 includes both infections that were found to be clinically positive and infections that were determined with a PCR test. In the case of clinically positive infections, the infections were detected on the basis of characteristic symptoms, without further examination in a laboratory. PCR positive means that the cases have actually been confirmed by blood tests.
