Decorating in Latvian Signs: A Revolutionary Digital Dance Performance in Latvia

At the moment when the lights on the stage suddenly go out and the dancer finds himself completely alone in the digital environment, the way back to the audience must be found anew. Only by looking into yourself, into Latvian and into the code of identity – the lines and patterns of Latvian signs, will you discover an as yet unsuspected power. And one to one, two to four, tens to hundreds, and “one” will be “us” again. “Decorating with Latvian signs” is a special and unique event in the history of Latvian stage folk dance, because instead of the usual stadium or stage format, the signs are organized in a digital environment, merging hundreds of dancers with tradition, animations and editing possibilities.

More than 600 Latvian stage dancers from seventeen Latvian A-group ensembles, the Saulkrasti choir “Anima”, the drum and bagpipe music group “Auļi”, musicians Otto Trapāns, Undīne Balode, Jānis Kalniņš and Latvīte are involved in the creation of the multimedia dance performance “Decorating in Latvian signs”. Circe. The project is implemented by the artistic working group – choreographer Dagmāra Bārbale, composer Mārtiņš Miļevskis, director Reinis Suhanovs, video artist Reinis Blūms, sound director Kaspars Bārbals, author of vocal arrangements Laura Leontjeva.
