Lcar use has never been higher than during this post-Covid period, according to the latest barometer from Vias, the Belgian Institute for Road Safety, which compared the transport habits of Belgians compared to the period before confinement, we read Friday in Libre Belgique and La Derniere Heure. The people of Brussels have massively abandoned public transport in favor of the car and, to a lesser extent, the bicycle and other active modes of transport.
Walking is more often practiced, going from almost 10% before confinement to more than 18%. These figures are to be correlated with the drastic drop in the use of public transport by Brussels residents. Thus, transport by tram and metro fell from 9.51% to 2.68%, while the use of the bus fell from 2.27% to 3%.
“It is obvious that when the situation returns to normal, some people will return to their old mode of transportation. But the Covid crisis constituted a real fracture in terms of mobility everywhere in Europe and I think that a large part of the population will keep their new transport habits ”, specifies Julien Leblud of the Vias Institute.
