Declining Trust in Ukrainian Media Amid Russian Invasion: Survey Results and Analysis

At the same time, the share of those who do not trust the telethon increased to 38%. The remaining 19% were undecided about their attitude. However, as of today, the balance of trust-distrust remains positive (that is, more of those who trust him than do not trust him).

Among those who trust Vladimir Zelensky, 52% trust the telethon (29% do not trust. Among those who do not trust the president, the level of trust is much lower – 12% trust, 69% do not trust).

In all regions, approximately the same number of people (42-44%) trust the United News telethon.

As KIIS Deputy Director Anton Grushetsky noted, it is important to understand that after the invasion, the landscape of information consumption has radically changed and television is now watched by a minority of the population (in particular, the revision of the telethon is not as significant as many may think). In addition, now, in general, trust in the Ukrainian media has significantly decreased, that is, there is a general problem with trust in the media (and not just the telethon).

“In any case, although the indicators of trust in the telethon have decreased, many still trust it. As we noted in October, with the current indicators of trust, there remains an optimal opportunity for a less problematic transformation of the telethon into another format that will better meet the information needs of the current situation,” – he said.

The survey was conducted on December 4-10, 2023 among 1,200 respondents in all regions except the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbass, as well as territories where there is no Ukrainian mobile communication at the time of the survey.

Let us recall that the KIIS survey showed a decline in trust in the Ukrainian authorities. Ukrainian media have significantly lost trust, with trust indicators returning to December 2021 levels. Thus, over the past year, from 57% to 29% fewer people trust the Ukrainian media (from 14% to 40% there are more people who do not trust them).

“Unified News” is a nationwide information telethon launched on February 24, 2022 with the aim of informing the population about the situation in Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The content is produced by the public broadcaster National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine, three private media holdings 1+1 Media, Starlight Media, Inter Media Group, “We are Ukraine”, as well as the TV channel “Rada”, owned by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Each company broadcasts for a period of 6 hours.
