Declining Participation in Russia-Africa Summit Raises Concerns for Russia’s Ambitions

However, a day after the Niger coup, in the second half of last week, the Russia-Africa summit was also held in St. Petersburg, which also showed problems in Russia’s ambitions to win the hearts and minds of African politicians. Compared to the first Russia-Africa summit in 2019 in Sochi, where 43 heads of state participated, a significant drop can be seen – only 17 African heads of state came to the summit in St. Petersburg.

On the one hand, it is definitely also the result of pressure from Western countries, because those countries that have closer relations with Western countries do not want to risk appearing as supporters of the aggressor country. However, although the aim of the summit was clearly to show the world and strengthen good relations with African countries, Vladimir Putin instead had to listen to criticism and soften it with various general promises of cooperation.
