Declining Enrollment in Education Institutions in Uri: A Closer Look

Education

Uri people are studying a little less again – especially at universities

Even at the universities of applied sciences, the number has fallen again somewhat after an upward trend in recent years.

In the 2022/2023 winter semester, 661 Uri students were enrolled at a university, a technical college or a teacher training college. That’s 29 fewer than last year. The downward trend at universities and technical colleges continues, as the canton of Uri writes in a statement.

As part of the intercantonal agreements and concordats, the canton of Uri paid almost CHF 10 million for universities, technical colleges and teacher training colleges in 2022. This amount is divided. Uri paid around 2.9 million francs for cantonal universities and around 7.1 million francs for cantonal universities of applied sciences and teacher training colleges.

These intercantonal agreements and concordats ensure that people from Uri can attend a university, a university of applied sciences or a university of teacher education (as well as higher vocational training courses) on the same terms as residents of the canton in which they are located. In Uri itself, the tertiary level of education is not represented by local institutions. The “Cultures of the Alps” research institute in Altdorf has been an exception for a good three years.

“By providing training contributions, the canton of Uri is also continuing to promote equal access to educational institutions,” the statement said. Every person should be able to complete an education that corresponds to their abilities, even if they or their parents do not have the means to do so. In 2022, scholarships of around 1.1 million francs were paid out, the approved loans amounted to 273,900 francs, of which 93,000 francs were actually paid out. The figures differ only slightly from those of the previous year.

Zurich is the most popular university city

A total of 287 Uri students – 12 fewer than in the previous year – were enrolled at the cantonal universities and the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in the past winter semester. This continued the downward trend of the past few years. The proportion of men and women is almost equal – 140 women and 147 men. The most popular universities for Uri residents are the University of Zurich (62) and ETH Zurich (61). For years, the humanities and social sciences have been the top priorities for Uri students when it comes to their chosen fields of study. A total of 80 people recently studied this area.

While the number of Uri students at the universities and technical colleges has been falling for a long time, the trend at the cantonal universities of applied sciences and teacher training colleges has always been upwards in recent years, with a peak of 391 Uri students in the 2021/22 winter semester. In the new winter semester, the number went back down to 374 students from Uri, 214 of them women and 160 men.

Among the universities of applied sciences, the Central Switzerland University of Applied Sciences is still the most popular among the people of Uri. This institution, which is supported by Uri as a concordat canton, has seen an increase in Uri students of around 30 percent since the 2015/2016 winter semester.

Lots of prospective teachers

In the 2022/23 winter semester, Uri students were by far the most popular among the chosen subjects, followed by business/services and technology/IT as well as social work. According to the announcement, the persistently high number of Uri students in teacher training is positive insofar as the promotion of young talent is a high priority in times of an increasing shortage of teachers.
