Decline in Participation Rates for Breast, Colon, and Cervical Cancer Screening Surveys: RIVM Investigates Reasons and Strategies

The percentage of invitees who participated in the breast cancer screening program fell from 73% in 2021 to almost 71% in 2022. For colon cancer, it fell to more than 68% (71% in 2021). And for cervical cancer there was a decrease to 46% (54% in 2021). The RIVM is investigating why people participate less often in population surveys.

Cancer determined by population surveys

The figures for 2022 show that a form of cancer was found in thousands of people through population screening. Or in the case of colon cancer and cervical cancer, often a preliminary stage. There were 6,869 participants in breast cancer, 3,642 in cervical cancer (96% precancerous, 4% cancer) and 16,616 people in colon cancer (87% precancerous, 13% cancer).

Increase accessibility

Research shows that some groups participate significantly less in research. The RIVM knows that some of these people are not reached in the existing way. This generally concerns people with a lower income, lower education and/or migration background. That is why RIVM is working to get a better idea of how these people can be informed.

About the population surveys

A population survey is a medical examination of people who have no complaints about their health. The aim of the research is to find disease. Or a hereditary predisposition to disease, or factors that increase the risk of disease. The sooner a disease or its onset is discovered, the sooner treatment can begin. The chance of healing or fewer complaints is then greater. If detected early, treatment is often less drastic. The RIVM is responsible for national coordination. The RIVM does this on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport).
