An opinion poll published on Friday showed that the percentage of Israelis who support launching a ground attack on the Gaza Strip declined from 65 to 49 percent in less than 10 days.
Israel pledged to invade Gaza and “destroy” Hamas, following its surprise attack inside Israeli territory on October 7.
The Israeli newspaper “Maariv”, which conducted the opinion poll, said that the results showed that nearly half of the Israelis want to postpone any ground operation in Gaza.

She added: “In response to a question about whether the army should immediately escalate to a large-scale ground attack, 29 percent of Israelis agreed to that, while 49 percent said it would be better to wait, while 22 percent had not yet decided.”
The survey included a representative sample of 522 Israeli adults.
These results highlight the decline in support for a ground attack on Gaza, as a similar poll conducted on October 19 showed that the percentage at that time reached 65 percent.
The newspaper stated: “By detailing the answers, it becomes clear that there is no division on a political or demographic basis, but the matter is related to the issue of hostages, which has received great attention and led to a shift in opinion.”
Hamas is holding more than 200 people, including foreigners, according to Israeli authorities.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing Israeli and American officials, that Israel had agreed to postpone the implementation of a comprehensive ground attack on the Gaza Strip for the time being.

According to the newspaper’s report, Israel’s approval was due to “giving the United States sufficient time to be able to send missile defenses to the region.”
