Decline in Dutch Exports to Russia and Surge in Trade with Neighboring Countries

31 Oct 2023 at 00:01

Exports to Russia generated 1.7 billion euros for our country last year. That is considerably less than the 2.9 billion euros of a year earlier. Exports to countries near Russia have actually increased sharply.

Until recently, the Netherlands mainly exported a lot of machines, vehicles, floriculture and medicines to Russia. But that was quite a problem last year, according to figures from statistics agency CBS.

In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Trade restrictions have been in place since then. Trade with Russia, which is still permitted, has been made more difficult by the conflict. In addition, companies that still trade with Russia are often criticized. The export of ships, machines, metal waste and floriculture, among other things, has fallen sharply.

The CBS figures also show that some countries near Russia have suddenly become very large buyers of Dutch goods. For example, exports to neighboring Kazakhstan increased by almost 50 percent, while Uzbekistan bought 70 percent more in our country. Trade with Kyrgyzstan even tripled.
