Carnival, spring holidays and winter sports do not currently lead to rising corona and flu numbers. In fact, the spread of both viruses decreased further last week. This is evident from the latest figures from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
In week 8, the national average number of coronavirus particles in sewage water fell by 29 percent, compared to the previous week. In total, there were an average of 124 patients in hospital with corona, compared to 169 patients a week earlier.
In the RIVM graphs, the coronavirus – which peaked sharply before the turn of the year – is plummeting downwards. This trend continues after carnival and holidays. Four years ago, corona gained a foothold in the Netherlands, partly due to carnival revelers and returning winter sports enthusiasts.
The first official infection was diagnosed on February 27, 2020 in a resident of Loon op Zand in Brabant. But many more people had probably already become infected. From the initial hotspot Brabant, the virus spread to the rest of the country.
Respiratory tract infections
Figures from the RIVM show that the flu epidemic is continuing to decline. Last week, 48 out of 100,000 people went to the doctor with flu-like complaints. That is again lower than the week before. In the Netherlands, the flu virus type A is mainly circulating. But other viruses also cause acute respiratory infections, such as human metapneumovirus, rhinovirus and RS virus.
