Decline due to Corona: Fewer traffic accidents in SH | NDR.de – news

In 2020 there were significantly fewer traffic accidents in the country – around 80,000 were registered by the police. That is 13.5 percent less than in the previous year.

Significantly lower traffic levels were noted during the initial lockdown from mid-March to late April 2020, according to the state police report released today. Since the start of the second strict Corona measures in November and then later the shutdown in December, a lower volume of traffic has been determined. Around 17,000 traffic accidents were recorded by the police. People were injured in around 11,000 accidents. In around 2,000 accidents, someone was seriously injured – a decrease of 11.6 percent. 107 people died on the roads in the country in 2020 – seven more than in the previous year.

Sharp decline among seniors and children

There have been not so few road accidents involving children in 20 years. 1,092 (-12.8 percent) were taken by the police. A total of 1,003 (-18.4 percent) children had a minor accident and 114 (-6.6 percent) had a serious accident, the state police said. Children were also less likely to be harmed as passengers in cars. The officials against assume that there is a connection with pandemic-related school and daycare closings.

There were also significantly fewer accidents among seniors over 65 years of age: 4,492, which is 12.6 percent fewer than in the previous year. It was dangerous for seniors on two wheels: 43.9 percent of the casualties rode a bicycle or pedelec, 43.8 percent suffered serious injuries, nine of them died. Seniors are most at risk in road traffic – that is why the state police rely on prevention and education.

3,548 traffic accidents were registered on the country’s motorways – 22 percent fewer than the previous year. 890 people were injured in these accidents – in 2019 there were 274 more injuries. If you look at the last ten years, there were the most injuries in 2016 (1,225) and the fewest in 2020.

Fewer alcohol and drug accidents

The number of traffic accidents in which at least one person involved in the accident was under the influence of alcohol fell by 10.2 percent to 1,087 last year. The police recorded 15 percent fewer traffic accidents under the influence of drugs. 127 road users were injured or killed.
