The chamber regulations require deputies and senators to present a declaration of assets and income once they take possession of their seats. Coinciding with the beginning of the legislature, the 39 representatives elected by Galicia on July 23 have completed this procedure. There are 23 deputies (thirteen from the PP, seven from the PSOE, two from Sumar and one from the BNG) and 16 senators (twelve popular and four socialists).
One of those who has done so is the former socialist leader José Ramón Gómez Besteironow deputy for Lugo, who has reported that he has almost 300,000 euros in savings (adding the 240,000 that he declares to have in his accounts and another 47,000 in the fund accumulated in the professional pension system of the legal profession), a apartment bought in Lugo in 2005, a car and a motorcycle.
In this way, the Lugo socialist’s savings have more than doubled since his last declaration of assets, presented in 2013 as president of the Lugo Provincial Council; a position in which he remained until 2015. At that time he claimed to have around 134,000 euros in the bank, as well as the same property in Lugo and the same vehicles, acquired in 1999 and 2011.
On that occasion, its income came from the public treasury. Now, his declaration of economic interests – in which he must record his activity over the five years prior to his inauguration as a deputy in Congress – reflects his public salary after his return to the political front line, since the past month of March, and also part of the private activities during the time in which he was immersed in judicial proceedings.
Specifically, of those 60 months for which he must report, Besteiro has declared work for a total of 53. Thus, according to his declaration, in 2018 he appeared for a month and a half as an employee of River Soluziona; but just three months after leaving that A Coruña firm he began to work “self-employed” in the “law practice”: between March 1, 2019 and March 28, 2023. From that date, throughout For two and a half months, he served as a Government delegate in Galicia; a position that he left to run as head of Lugo’s list for Congress.
Last April, in one of his first interviews after his return to politics, he declared to the newspaper ABC that “for seven years I lived the life of a lawyer, of a freelancer.” A question that clarified La Voz de Galicia already in July, when he said that during the time that he had been out of politics due to accusations, he “returned to my life as a lawyer, or rather as a legal advisor. Not so much procedural, tribunais, as my job was before entering politics.” That same month he denied to El Progreso that he had received payment from the Provincial Council of A Coruña directed by Valentín González Formoso as an advisor. “I have never had such a position and if I did, I did not receive any salary”, he clarified about his activities and the doubts about his relations with that deputation.
