English has a bad history with penalties against German, Declan Rice also had a bitter experience with a 12 -pass kick. But he is now proud of the penalty.
England will face Germany at Wembley, Monday (29/6/2021) evening WIB in the round of 16 match Euro 2020. This is the 33rd meeting in all competitions for the two teams, with England winning 13, drawing four and losing 15.
But the record in the competitive arena is much different. English just three wins on 11 occasions while swallowing six defeats. If you narrow it down to meetings in major tournaments, the ‘Three Lions’ team has only won once in the last five meetings.
The victory was picked at European Cup 2000. Both drew in the 1982 World Cup group stage, then Germany won in the 1990 World Cup semifinals, 1996 European Cup, and the 2010 World Cup last 16.
Interestingly, two of the three defeats were swallowed by England on penalties. They lost 3-4 at Delle Alpi, Turin in the 1990 World Cup and lost 5-6 at Wembley, London in the 1996 European Cup semifinals.
So it’s no wonder that former German national team player Lothar Matthaeus believes England will not be able to win on penalties. The memory became a ghost for the England squad.
But England midfielder Declan Rice is indifferent to this sort of thing and has insisted he is ready to take on the task if asked. Even though he himself also had bad experiences as a junior with penalties.
“Yes, of course I would have taken the opportunity. If you had asked a few years ago, I would probably have said no. In three different tournaments with Chelsea as a kid, I had three chances to win the game (on penalties) and I missed out on this. all three,” said the West Ham United midfielder Standard.
“It didn’t sound good enough. I felt then, as a kid, the pressure of playing away, the enthusiasm, walking towards the ball, made me nervous. The funny thing is now with the crowd and I’ve coached him at West Ham all year, to get to that point. it’s really just a process in my head.”
“When the referee blows the whistle, you don’t have to move right away. You can spend a few extra seconds doing some breathing techniques to calm yourself down and then it’s about visualization: how you want to get the ball.”
“Those are things that I started to polish as I got older. I was just trying to practice and if my name was called to be the executor, I believe I can make it happen,” added the player who is reportedly being targeted by Manchester United.
