The European Union will not reopen its borders in July in Morocco and 13 other countries previously selected, for lack of consensus. The Europeans could not tune their violins on a list of countries whose level of contamination with covid-19 would allow them to be considered “safe”.

Diplomatic sources in Brussels announced on Saturday June 27 this information relating to the postponement of the decision to reopen Europe’s borders to 14 countries. The ambassadors of the EU countries and the Schengen area had proposed, Friday, a list of fifteen countries, except the United States.

Member states were asked to vote on Saturday at the latest, but some asked the Croatian EU presidency to give them more time. “Consultations continue, and will continue until Monday,” saidAFP a European diplomatic source. “It is difficult to predict an outcome, but the presidency hopes to be able to vote on Monday,” said the same source.

The countries on the list of 14 selected meet several epidemiological criteria, in particular a rate of new cases of covid-19 close to or below 16 per 100,000 inhabitants (EU average) over the last 14 days, a tendency to the stability or decline of new cases, as well as the measures put in place to combat the pandemic (the practice of tests, etc.)

The only problem is that many EU Member States believe that the reliability of epidemiological data provided by third countries, in particular China, is “problematic”.
