Decision to promote the national sport

Gambling Specialist Directors Conference on November 21, 2022

National sport to receive up to CHF 75 million annually from lottery funds in 2023-2026

(Bern)(PPS) Yesterday, at the request of the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Sport (SFS), the Conference of Games Specialist Directors (FDKG) decided to support national sport with the net profits of the lottery every year in the period of funding 2023-2026 as follows :

  • Basic contribution of CHF 60 million per year. 88% goes to the Swiss Olympic Association and 12% to the Swiss Football Association, the Swiss Football League and the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation.
  • Contribution for special financing areas up to a maximum of CHF 15 million per year. This contribution will only be paid if the development of the profits of the two lottery companies SWISSLOS and Loterie Romande permits. It is to be used for projects in the following areas:
    • Expanding the advancement of women
    • Expanding Disability Sports and Inclusion
    • Development/expansion of the professionalisation of junior coaches
    • Expanding support for athletes
    • Establishment of the “Sport Innovation Hub”
    • Football and club development
    • Enhance training/support/promotion
  • In addition, the foundation receives an annual grant of CHF 250,000 for its operation and administration.

So far and until the end of 2022, the funds have been allocated to the national sport via the Sport-Toto-Gesellschaft (STG). With the entry into force of the all-Swiss gambling arrangement on 1 January 2021, the responsibility for deciding the amount and target of the financing was transferred to the FDKG, the distribution of funds is now carried out via Swiss Sports Promotion Foundation. This will pay the funds for the first time in 2023 and will be responsible for the proper use of the funds.

The FDKG wants to achieve this with the promotion of national sport exclusively through the competent Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Sports and the STG ceases its sponsorship activities. For this reason, the FDKG has decided that the contribution for the exceptionally financed areas will only flow if the general meeting of the STG decides to liquidate the STG in 2023 and the remaining assets are distributed according to the statute – in this case ¾ of the assets goes to the cantons and ¼ to national sport or entirely to the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Sport.

The resolution required the approval of both the majority of the members of the voting conference of the cantons of French-speaking Switzerland and the majority of the members of the voting conference of the cantons of German-speaking Switzerland and the canton of Ticino.
