Decided in Europe: mobile phones can finally be recharged with just one charger

By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. As of spring 2026, this requirement will also apply to laptops. The new directive is part of a wider EU effort to reduce electrical and electronic waste and enable consumers to make greener choices.

Under the terms of the directive, consumers will no longer have to purchase a new charger for every new device, as many small and medium-sized portable electronic devices will be able to be charged with a single charger.

Devices from all manufacturers that can be charged with a wired cable and have an electrical output of up to 100 watts will need to be equipped with a USB Type-C port, including mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, all types of headphones, PDAs video game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, for keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems and laptops.

All devices that support fast charging will now have the same charging speed. This means that users will be able to charge their devices at the same rate with any compatible charger.

As wireless charging becomes more common, the European Commission is expected to harmonize charging interoperability requirements by the end of 2024 to prevent a situation that could negatively impact consumers and the environment. It will also help prevent the so-called “technology trap” effect, in which the consumer becomes dependent on a single producer.

Information on the charging characteristics of the new devices will be shown on a special label. This will make it easier for consumers to check if the chargers they already have are compatible with the new device. Buyers will also be able to make an informed decision on whether to buy a new charger with their new device.

The new requirements will encourage the reuse of chargers and help save up to € 250 million per year. The new rules will not apply to products placed on the market before the date of their application.
