Better not to step on: ice surfaces can collapse without warning –

Even if the ice layer is still very thin here – on other sections of the Main-Danube Canal, the impression could be created during these days that you can step on the ice. However, the Waterways and Shipping Office has issued an urgent warning.

“Right now you don’t have many alternatives for a leisure activity. A long march on the canal is a good idea,” says Stefanie von Eine, who is responsible for the Main-Danube Canal at the Waterways and Shipping Office.
Branch breakage and danger of collapse: This is the situation in Fürth.
But at the same time it warns of dangers: Because the ice cover, which could form in places on the river in the wake of the persistent cold, is in any case deceptive, making it extremely dangerous to step on. Because shipping continues, the boats also have to pass through the locks. With each lock, the water level rises or falls by around ten to 30 centimeters.
This means that the ice can either break or that a layer of air forms underneath. However, this cannot be seen at first glance, so people can suddenly break in when entering. The lock continues at irregular intervals even when shipping comes to a standstill.
