December Scaldati, tribute to the “Poet of Palermo” ten years after his death

Twenty days of shows, screenings, exhibitions, meetings and performances, all free, to learn about, spread and pay homage to the Palermo playwright Franco Scaldati on the tenth anniversary of his death. With a rich program of widespread events that from Palermo reach Prato, Enna, Messina and Catania, from 1 to 21 December, dedicated to the “poet of Palermo”, one of the most significant figures of the second half of twentieth-century European theatre.
Il December Warm up includes a review with 4 films in the “Franco style” at the Cinema De Seta, a photographic exhibition, 4 focuses and workshops between Sicily and Tuscany, 3 research laboratories and 3 multidisciplinary performances by 3 directors with 3 musicians and over 20 performers , a special appointment in Sarto’s workshop which was that of Franco Scaldati it’s a Night Warm up with the presentation of the new volumes with his unpublished texts, an academic honor and a dramaturgy award dedicated to him. We begin with a new staging of the “Franco Scaldati” exhibition, curated by Valentina Greco e Francesco Guttuso which, after the Orestiadi Foundation of Gibellina and the International Center of Photography of Palermo, arrives at the Carini Castle from 1 to 3 December – with the photographs of Nino Annaloro, Letizia Battaglia, Rita Cricchio e Claudia Uzzo.

An edited review follows Umberto Cantone e Franco Maresco, at the Cinema De Seta of the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, with four films “in the manner of Scaldati”, starting with the long-awaited return to Palermo, over 10 years later, of The Return of Cagliostro of Ciprì and Maresco (2 December at 9pm), followed by I don’t know the men of this city. Life and theater of Franco Scaldati by Franco Maresco (Italy, 2015; 9 December at 9pm); The Children of Violence by Luis Bunuel (13 December, 9pm) e Diary without dates (Italy, 1996; 21 December at 9pm) first feature film by Roberto Andòwith Franco Scaldati.
A mention in itself deserves the presentation of 3 new multidisciplinary performances which combine theater and music with the text Indovina Ventura, (15 and 16 December at 10.30 pm, Spazio Franco), re-proposed for the occasion in a scenic rewriting curated by three Sicilian directors: Giuseppe Massa, Margherita Ortolani e Giuseppe Provenzano who intertwined the staging with the music, in close collaboration with three of the most acclaimed musicians on the contemporary scene: Serena Ganci, Dario Mangiaracina (The List Representative) e Angelo Sicurella who developed the musical potential of the work, giving life to three performances between theater and music that make up a unique work with multiple languages. On stage, 24 actors and actresses, selected from over 40 participants in the long workshop activities led by the six artists and aimed at producing the work.

The tribute to Scaldati will continue numerous events to end on December 21st at the Spazio Franco of the Cantieri Culturali della Zisa with Dark Night Warmed up, final appointment with theater and non-theater artists, intellectuals, musicians who knew and worked with the playwright and poet, who addressed his work and recognized the greatness and universal scope of his legacy. On this occasion, the third and fourth volumes of the Opera Omnia edited by will also be presented Valentina Valentini e Viviana Raciti who have just received the nomination for the Ubu Awards among Special Projects precisely for this editorial project.
