Deceive inflation with the right comparison: November 13, 2022, 7:12 am

Prices are rising, even in auto insurance. If you stick with your fare, which is getting more expensive, you could pay several hundred euros more next year. Motorists can save a lot if they regularly compare their car insurance and change it if necessary…

A thorough comparison is important. The Geldratgeber Finanztip looked into how consumers can get the right and cheapest car insurance offers. Experts recommend using Verivox or Check24 as a comparison portal and then getting an offer from the direct insurer Huk24.

Most drivers only have until November 30 to check their car insurance and switch to a cheaper provider if necessary. Especially in times of rising prices, many people are looking for ways to save money. “Especially if the last insurance change was a long time ago, the savings potential is considerable. A change now brings money that we can all use particularly well in times of high inflation,” says Kathrin Gotthold, insurance expert at Finanztip. This year’s comparison is particularly important for families with novice drivers, because the current study Finanztip showed particularly favorable rates for them.

Big price differences for comparable rates

The most important thing is the in-depth comparison. Consumers face two major challenges: Prices for comparably good insurance rates vary widely. And no comparison portal reproduces all rates from all insurers. In some cases, the expert editors of Finanztip have identified large differences between the appropriate tariffs and the cheapest ones. “This year, we experienced significant price differences: more than 50% surcharge for the second cheapest fare over the cheapest fare,” says Gotthold. “One of our model customers can save more than 300 euros on his fully comprehensive insurance if he switches to the cheaper provider.” The current Finanztip study has revealed a new tariff on the market that is particularly advantageous for many policyholders with inexperienced drivers as passengers. Both Verivox and Check24 now display this rate to consumers when comparing.

Cheap rates

Finanztip advises consumers looking for the cheapest car insurer to combine Verivox or Check24 with Huk24 direct insurer. First, consumers take advantage of the strengths of comparison portals, as they can query many providers together.

However, no comparison portal has listed all providers in the Finanztip study. A direct insurer that hasn’t been available via a comparison portal for years is Huk24, which often offers affordable rates. Gotthold explains: “To compensate for this weakness of the comparison portals, car owners should at least ask a second question on the Huk24 online calculator.”

So Finanztip investigated

For 32 fictitious model customers, the experts from Finanztip examine the most suitable and cheapest car insurance offers. Regular surveys by Finanztip show that comparison portals offer the consumer a good initial overview of the market. A direct insurer that has not been available via a comparison portal for years is Huk24. However, this provider often offers cheap rates. Since consumers cannot find these tariffs on the usual comparison portals, the Finanztip experts also query the tariffs for sample customers on the online calculator of this direct insurer.

In the October 2022 survey, the comparison portal Verivox did slightly better than its competitor Check24 in the search for cheap car insurance rates: Verivox showed the cheapest offers in ten of 32 queries, Check24 eight times. At the time of the October survey, Verivox had shown us the cheapest fares in six other cases, however consumers have also been able to find these deals on Check24 since November. However, both portals listed several insurers, so that neither portal always found the cheapest rate for every customer. The direct insurer Huk24 also had attractive rates for many sample customers (7 times out of 32), but not for all.
