In the commercial area not far from the Weiterstadt motorway junction, sporting goods are now being sold on the site of the former Sconto furniture store.

The second largest branch of the French sporting goods retailer Decathlon in Germany opened on Thursday in Weiterstadt. After the branch on Alexanderplatz in Berlin, the new branch in southern Hesse with a sales area of 8,000 square meters is around 700 square meters smaller than the largest Decathlon branch in the capital.

Two years ago, the company said it had bought the former Sconto furniture store on Gutenbergstrasse and had it extensively renovated. In the Rhine-Main area, the company is already represented in Frankfurt’s north-west center, in Offenbach, Wiesbaden, Dreieich and in Hofheim-Wallau. In Hesse there is also another branch in Fulda in East Hesse.

In the branch in Weiterstadt, which is located near Autobahn 5 and where around 80 people work, there is a range of sports for more than 100 types of sport. 500 parking spaces are available on the site. Cycling, mountain sports and fitness are viewed as “strategic sports”.

All sports products can be tried out in the branch. According to the company, even large ones are exhibited “ready to try”. Children can ride around on a bike test track, while parents browse through the wide range of sporting goods or relax with a coffee at the entrance in the bistro area.

It is open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays until 9 p.m.
