Glen Durrant succeeded Michael van Gerwen on Thursday as the winner of the Premier League Darts. The 49-year-old Englishman won in the final of the prestigious tournament 11-8 against fellow countryman Nathan Aspinall.
With Aspinall (29) and Durrant, the only two Premier League debutants of this season reached the final. In the final battle it took fourteen legs before Durrant placed the first break of the match. The number thirteen in the world thus came to 8-6 and did not give up that margin anymore.
For Durrant, who played his first Premier League match 36 weeks ago, it is the first overall victory at a PDC television tournament. The three-time world champion at the BDO only switched to the largest darts association last year.
‘Duzza’, who also finished first in the group stage, survived no fewer than four match darts in his semi-final against Gary Anderson earlier in the evening: 10-9. Aspinall made it to the final by a 10-7 win over world champion Peter Wright.
Van Gerwen was not in the final of the Premier League for the first time since 2012. The winner of 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 experienced a negative scoop at the beginning of September when he was already eliminated in the group stage.
The Premier League play-offs were supposed to be completed in May at the O2 Arena in London, but the corona crisis completely overhauled the league’s schedule. The final rounds were now in an empty Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
