Debunking the Myth of ‘Organ Picket Hours’: Internal Medicine Specialist Sets the Record Straight

Jakarta

A post on social media went viral some time ago regarding ‘organ picket hours’. The post reveals that organs can work harder at certain times.

This condition makes the organs in the body seem to work according to their respective shift schedules. Is that right?

Internal medicine specialist Dr. Aru Ariadno, SpPD-KGEH emphasized that the body’s internal organs actually work 24 hours and do not use a ‘picket schedule’. He also added that time does not determine whether the internal organs work hard or not.

Dr. Aru said that what determines the level of intensity of the organ’s work or not is the person’s activity.

“Actually, it has nothing to do with time but is related to daily activities. When we are stressed, working in a tiring office, our brains work harder than when we sleep or rest,” said Dr. Aru to detikcom.

Apart from the type of activity carried out, Dr Aru said that the food consumed can also affect how the organs perform. According to him, there are certain types of food or certain ways of eating that can actually make organ performance harder.

“When we eat food that is more than usual, high in fat, too sweet or lacking in fiber, our intestines work harder than when we fast. So our body organs work according to the times when we use them more and are not related to the time of day,” he explained. .

Regarding organ performance, Dr. Aru said that the organs in the body work autonomously and move on their own without human assistance. All organs work individually, but do not work interchangeably.

When a person is resting, organs continue to work to carry out functions in the body. Therefore, according to Dr. Aru, the term ‘organ picket time’ has no basis.

“So the statement that there is a shift in the body’s organs has no scientific evidence to date,” he concluded.
