Debunking the Myth: Does Chewing Gum Really Stay in Your Stomach for Years?

Swallowing chewing gum is highly discouraged because it is harmful to health. But does it really stay in the stomach for several years? Oxford professor of clinical gastroenterology Simon Travis answered this question.

CNN reports this.

According to the specialist, he doesn’t know where this myth came from, it’s all “old wives’ tales.” Perhaps it appeared because someone wanted to stop their children from chewing gum.

Travis said that chewing gum is only harmful to the body if done in “excessive quantities.” This is considered to be three or more pieces per day.

“If you swallow chewing gum, it will pass through the stomach, intestines and come out unchanged. There are cases when chewing gum gets stuck in the intestines of babies and children, if they swallowed a lot, then it causes an obstruction. But in more than 30 years of practice, I have never I have never seen a single case like this,” he added.

Cursor wrote earlier that a newly developed experimental chewing gum could become an unexpected tool in the fight against the spread of coronavirus.
