Debunking the Basketball vs. Football Debate: Why Both Sports Are Equal

You can love your sport without comparing it to another and disgusting its fans, I swear.

I can’t say if I’m more of a basketball or football fan. I have been immersed in football since I was little and I am linked to it by the territory. Basketball being less developed and less popular nationally, I became interested in it by turning to the NBA. So obviously, my relationship with the team I support is different, having never set foot on Uncle Sam’s grounds. However, basketball is the sport I prefer to play. In short, as you will have understood, there are a lot of elements to take into account, but I think I can say that I love football as much as basketball, and that is important for the rest of this article.

A dialogue of the deaf

For several weeks, on social networks and particularly TikTok, basketball and football fans have been at war. They put forward dubious arguments, devoid of nuance, as to which of these two sports is better. So this leads to sterile debates, as often on social networks:

(Not being able to introduce a TikTok carousel into an article, I had to do a screen recording. You can find the original publication ici).

More than 2 million views and 200,000 likes for a video supposed to prove that football is better, in every way, than basketball. And it’s anything but a UFO, since there are dozens of videos like this, which compare the two sports, on TikTok. So we will try to nuance the debate so that everyone likes each other at the end of the article.

Field

In the TikTok above, the size of the football field, x times larger than the basketball field, would make it a better sport, in particular because football players tire more during a match. Except that the recurrence of the effort is precisely adapted to the size of the terrain. As it is easier for the body to recover from a basketball match, they occur much more frequently than in football, with a team being able to play two days in a row (82 matches for a regular basketball season, 36 for football). In short, both are equal and the practice of a sport is logically adapted to the size of its field.

Big muscles

Not sure that football fans chose the best argument, basketball players are generally much more muscular. Physical contact, omnipresent during the 48 minutes of a basketball match, forces players to strengthen their muscles. Conversely, some footballers benefit from remaining thin and light to gain speed and dynamism. As with the field, the body is logically adapted to its discipline.

Legends

It’s an endless debate and far too subjective, so we will avoid getting into it but I think that the legends of these two sports are equal, even today. On one side, we can see LeBron James and Stephen Curry playing, on the other Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial. Let’s enjoy.

The atmosphere

Here too, it is specific to the size of the stadium, but also to the culture of the sport. Football is more about fervor and singing, basketball more about shows and trash talk. Two different ways of supporting, but equally entertaining and respectable.

The score

Two very different schemes. On the one hand, basketball, where access to the point is simple, which makes the match dynamic, but sometimes without interest because you have to wait until the end of the latter for the points to start being worth something, there where in football, the goal is so sacred that no matter when it is scored, it always conveys something singular. At the risk of running into a 90-minute purge.

Relaxation

Here too, not sure that football fans have chosen the best place to argue. Although the action of jumping is common to both sports, access to the point, which is above their heads, encourages basketball players to work more on relaxation. Cristiano Ronaldo may be a UFO, but basketball players jump to these heights much more often. That doesn’t make them better athletes, they just adapted their athletic abilities to the discipline (I feel like I’m repeating myself).

Love and peace

You can always find an area in which one sport is better than another, but that doesn’t make it better. No matter our preferences, we are all united behind the same passion: sport. So rather than going to war, let’s love each other. And don’t forget: Stephen Curry > Lionel Messi, wisely.
