Trying to hide the scale of the failure of the Kremlin, which after the invasion of Ukraine almost completely lost its share of the gas market in the EU, Gazprom head Alexei Miller tried to deceive the Russians by declaring that China could supposedly replace Western Europe for Moscow.
“Pipeline supplies to China in the very near future may reach the level of supply volumes that we had for export to Western Europe”he said.
However, the false information caused outrage among economists. Russian analyst Anatoly Nesmiyan statedthat Miller lied, since all calculations demonstrate the absence of any opportunity for Russia in the near future to replace the lost market of Western Europe.
“I can understand when the president lies. That’s the job. Why lie to the head of a company when all the indicators are easy to find? In 2022, Gazprom supplied 85 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe. It’s modest and cannot be compared with previous years, but so be it. In China pipes gas through the Power of Siberia, also in 2022 – 15 billion cubic meters. The design capacity is 38 billion cubic meters, but this is if gas is brought in from other sources, not only from the Kovyktinskoye and Chayandinskoye fields. And this is just a project for now. By the way, when it was necessary to urgently call a pipelayer to lay Nord Stream 2, it was just pulled away from laying a pipe from Sakhalin, which was supposed to supply gas to Power of Siberia, so all the deadlines were pushed back by another couple of years. Anyway So far, Gazprom cannot supply more than 20 billion cubic meters through the pipeline to China,” – he said.
Moreover, the immediate prospects for Moscow are also bleak.
“And there is nothing else even in the project, that is, “Power of Siberia – 2” has been announced, but there is not even the consent of the Chinese side for it, and yet it still needs to be built, connected to the northern fields, in general, there is no “near future” here it doesn’t smell.
