On July 24, the Latvian Council for Children’s and Youth Literature (LBJLP) will celebrate the 77th birthday of the writer Jānis Baltvilks and present the “International Jānis Baltvilks Prize 2021”, praising the brightest authors and artists of children’s and young people’s literature. The award ceremony will be held for the 17th time.

“The Jānis Baltvilks Prize is the largest national prize in children’s and young people’s literature – it annually objectively evaluates the yield of all children’s and young people’s books from May last year to May.

We select the works that are really high-quality and do not follow the recommendations of the publishers, so there are also works that may not be in the focus of “Laligaba” (Latvian Literature of the Year Award), ” and the jury evaluates the youth book awards as a whole – both text and visual must be successful.

Debtors stronger than ever

The prize is also awarded for the best international children’s and youth literary work and its translation – in 2021 it was awarded to the French writer Delfine de Vigan for the novel “No and I” (“John Roze’s publishing house”, 2021), as well as to the translator Inta Šmitei.

“This year’s work is a bit less than last year, but for the first time there is a very strong debut – there has been no special competition in this category next year, but this year’s debutants are so strong that they are nominated for other awards than just the debut award,” says S Tretyakov.

A total of 63 books, 32 translated literature works and 31 original literature editions were discussed this year – 13 of them were included in the “short list”.

“Planet Book” in the Botanical Garden

For the third year in a row, the Jānis Baltvilks Award Ceremony will take place in the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia.

“We have loved this garden very much – it really corresponds to the theme of the Baltvilka Prize, also when evaluating the works, we always make sure that the works depict nature, the freshness and rhythm of the Baltvilks language. how the wind chills there or, as in another year, the rain rattles, ”explains S. Tretyakova.

The central theme of the ceremony this year is the theme “Planet Book”.

“Our writers and literary translators have mysteriously offered many alien stories this year. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we do not know where and why what is happening now is happening – the pandemic and the associated restrictions in which we live. However, books give us the freedom to fantasize and be free, ”says S. Tretyakov.

As every year, a special musical event is expected at the ceremony – solo songs with poetry by Jānis Baltvilks created especially for this event will experience a musical premiere. The author of the songs is composer Madara Pētersone, they will be performed by mezzo-soprano Zane Rozenfelde and accordionist Māris Rozenfelds.
