Deborah Birx – Book: The hope Trump would lose

NEW YORK (Dagbladet): In the book “Preventable”, Slavitt describes how he thinks federal authorities under Trump completely failed to limit the pandemic.

He also mentions a meeting he had with Birx in August last year, and writes that she signaled that she wanted Trump to lose the presidential election, reports CNN.

As is well known, Trump also lost the election in November against Biden.

Pressed out

Birx soon became a key and prominent adviser to Trump when the pandemic first broke out. She was given the role of corona coordinator in the White House. But when she met Slavitt in August last year, she had been pushed out of the inner circle and replaced by radiologist Scott Atlas, who had no professional experience with infectious diseases.

Atlas was hired after Trump discovered him on Fox News.

– I wanted to get an understanding of whether – if there was a strained transfer of power to a new administration, if she would help Biden and his team to be effective, Slavitt writes in the book and continues:

At one point, after a short pause, she looked me in the eye and said: “I hope the election has a certain outcome.” I had the most important information I needed, writes the Biden adviser in the book that will be published on Tuesday, according to CNN.

During the conversation with Slavitt, Birx is said to have said that she was “completely gagged” and was not allowed to set up interviews with national media.

– The most difficult

“Fighting the virus and Scott Atlas at the same time is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Birx.

When she became Trump’s corona coordinator, she came from her job as the United States’ global AIDS coordinator. It is a job on a par with ambassadors in the US State Department.

It was a job she got from then-President Barack Obama in 2014. Prior to that, she headed the AIDS department at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Under Trump, she got what appeared to be a rather stressful role – including during the daily press conferences of the president of the White House last spring.

– Redd

Among other things, she was heavily criticized for sitting still in the room without protesting when Trump proposed injecting bleach as a treatment for corona.

In August last year, it was a couple of months until Trump himself tested positive for covid-19 and ended up in hospital. He held many large gatherings in the White House, and both guests and staff often went blindfolded.

– Her early optimism had long since disappeared. By the end of October 2020, she was all over the place. She was simply scared, writes Slavitt.

Birx had indicated that she was willing to work for Biden as well, but in December, before Biden took over, she chose to retire.
