Debian is preparing for error 2038
Historically, Unix operating systems (including Linux) have used a 32-bit integer to represent the time, specifically the number of seconds since the start of 1970. But this approach has an upper bound, at some point in 2038 the number of seconds since the start of 1970 will be too large a number to to count.
Debian project currently working on patching 32-bit softwareto be compatible with 2038. Debian experimental is now transitioning to 64-bit time_t, which is compatible with 2038. The goal of this transition is to ensure that 32-bit architectures are able to handle current and future timestamps referring to times after 2038.
LuneOS Iced Coffee
LuneOS is a mobile operating system based on the Linux kernel and currently developed by the WebOS Ports community. It is an open source successor to webOS, where the user interface is rebuilt from the ground up using the latest technologies available.
This system is maintained and developed by enthusiasts and is still in the early stages of development. After more than four years since the last release, the 29th update of this mobile operating system codenamed “iced coffee“.
The Ubuntu installer improves accessibility
The Ubuntu Desktop team has updated the Ubuntu Desktop Installer with various accessibility features for the upcoming operating system series Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat). Among the many new features, users will also be able to more easily enable various accessibility features before installing the operating system directly from the Installer written in Flutter, first introduced with the release of Ubuntu 23.04.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is scheduled for release on April 25, 2024, and will include the upcoming GNOME 46 desktop series and the Linux 6.8 kernel. It will then be available for public beta testing and ready for April Fools’ Day.
Slimbook Manjaro Hero
Slimbook, in collaboration with the Manjaro project, launched a gaming laptop Slimbook Manjaro Hero. It is a 15.6-inch laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-13620H processor with 10 cores, 16 threads and a frequency of 4.6 GHz and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8 GB graphics card. In addition, this machine offers DDR5 memory, a backlit keyboard, an aluminum chassis and two SSD NVME drives with a capacity of 2 TB.
The notebook comes pre-installed with Manjaro Linux and the applications Steam, Heroic Games Launcher, ProtonUp-QT, OBS, Lutris and a two-week trial version of CrossOver 24. Its price starts at 1,399 euros (35,600 crowns).
Newly released
A distribution derived from Ubuntu and Linux Mint Ultimate Edition was released in version 2024.02.04. Minimalist live distribution Plop Linux available in version 24.1. Released Debian Edu 12.5.0, a patch release of a Linux distribution intended for educational purposes. ExTiXa live distribution built on Ubuntu, has announced a release numbered 24.2.
