Eminem’s Mother, Debbie Nelson, Passes Away at 69
Grammy-winning rapper Eminem is mourning the loss of his mother, Debbie Nelson, who died at the age of 69. Confirmation of Nelson’s passing came from Eminem’s longtime representative, Dennis Dennehy, on Tuesday, though no official cause of death was given. Nelson had publicly battled lung cancer in recent years.
The public has long known about the complex relationship between Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, and his mother. Their fraught dynamic was widely explored in Eminem’s music, notably in his 2002 hit "Cleaning Out My Closet." The song paints a raw and emotional picture of their struggles: "Witnessin’ your mama poppin’ prescription pills in the kitchen. Bitchin’ that someone’s always goin’ through her purse and shit’s missin’. Goin’ through public housing systems, victim of Münchausen’s syndrome. My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t.”
Even in the Oscar-winning "Lose Yourself" from the movie 8 Mile, Eminem referenced his mother, hinting at their troubled past with the now-iconic line, "Mom’s spaghetti." The song, which garnered the Grammy for Best Rap Song in 2004, showcased Eminem’s undeniable talent while continuing to offer glimpses into his personal life.
Nelson sought legal recourse against Eminem on two occasions, filing defamation lawsuits over his public statements about her. In 2008, she released a memoir, "My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem," aimed at sharing her perspective on their story and providing insight into Eminem’s early years.
Despite the public discord, Eminem has recently celebrated major milestones in his career. He was named Best Hip-Hop Act at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Adding to the joy, he recently announced that he will soon become a grandfather, sharing the touching news through a heartfelt music video revealing his daughter Hailie Jade’s pregnancy.
