What are the debates of the 78th UN General Assembly about?
The 78th session of the UN General Assembly has started in New York, where leaders of 140 countries will gather to discuss the world’s main problems.
The stated theme of the current debate is restoring trust and global solidarity: accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals to ensure peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, hinted that one of the key topics of debate, of course, would be Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Last year, Zelensky was not physically present at the General Assembly meeting due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And this year, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will not be among the speakers at the UN General Assembly.
What did Zelensky plan to talk about?
Advisor to the head of the Presidential Office, Mikhail Podolyak, announced the day before that Zelensky, speaking at the UN, would talk about the need for a speedy victory over Russia.
Also, according to Podolyak, the Ukrainian president emphasized that “the end of the war can be accelerated if there is a sufficient amount of weapons for Ukraine.”
And the deputy head of the OP, Igor Zhovkva, said in August that Zelensky’s speech would be devoted to the peace formula, the creation of a special tribunal and a compensation mechanism for compensation for damage caused by the war.
What other plans does Zelensky have in the USA?
In addition to speaking at the debates of the UN General Assembly, the Ukrainian president is planning a number of bilateral meetings. In particular, negotiations with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have already been announced.
However, the most important bilateral meeting will be talks with US President Joe Biden at the White House scheduled for September 21. State leaders are expected to talk about providing new weapons and continuing military and financial support for Ukraine.
Zelensky also intends to meet with US senators. This meeting will take place at a time when the US Congress is considering the allocation of new funds to help Ukraine.
