A breath before the internal party elections for the emergence of a new leadership in Koumoundourou, Documento hosts the four presidential candidates of SYRIZA – PS in a debate for the next day of the party.
Ahead of the first round on November 24 the Apostolos Gletsos, Pavlos Polakis, Sokratis Famellos and Nicholas Farandouris who claim the reins of SYRIZA – PS answer questions, among other things, about the party issue, about their vision regarding the reconstruction of the country and the alternative solution to the ND government, about electoral cooperation and about dealing with the extreme right.
After the stormy conference, what would you say to members, executives, MPs who left or are in the process of leaving SYRIZA – PS, either because they are close to Stefanos Kasselakis or because they denounce the majority for undemocratic procedures? When does politics return to Koumoundourou? What is your first commitment that you will implement if you are elected president of SYRIZA – PS?
I believe that the great majority of the left and the democratic world did not go away. He is patiently waiting to see light and vision to enlist again! I address them all these days and I look forward to them for the future of the faction. What I make clear publicly and at every opportunity is that with me as president the “wounded” from the long-term introversion of SYRIZA – PS will heal its wounds. The next day will pave the way for a party that will make a strong and convincing opposition to Mitsotakis and the Right, will regroup unitedly with roles and tasks, will rebuild collectivity and camaraderie among the people who make it up. At the same time, it will be re-grounded with society, neighborhoods, workplaces, social networks. It will rally the selfless people of work and daily toil. It will contribute to the creation of social movements in all fields, acting as a “liberator” of social dynamics and relying on the education, literacy, courtesy and originality of the new generation. It will produce stems from the real life spaces. In general, the next day for SYRIZA – PS will be better from every side, because every darkness is followed by light.
Regarding the program positions for the reconstruction of the country, which do you consider to be the most pivotal?
As you know, I have publicly formulated a program of six main pillars, all of which are absolutely necessary and constitute a condition, after two terms of harsh neoliberal governance from Mitsotakis’s Right, for the country to move forward unscathed and for society to stand on its feet again . However, it is no coincidence that the central slogan in my support campaign for the presidency of SYRIZA – PS is “Honest Greece”! I believe that no program, no well-intentioned effort to rehabilitate society and the strata that are currently suffering can succeed if the policies we will follow are not directed directly at the entanglement and waste of public wealth that we have seen taking place systematically in recent years. From there, that is, from the waste, the “robbery”, the filthy lucre, the interruption of the flow of money from the pockets of the people of work and healthy entrepreneurship to the coffers of the 100 families who plunder the labor of the many, we will find the resources to finance the honest Greece we envision. Necessary tools for this are the recovery of strategic pillars of the economy by the state, as well as a Justice system friendly to this goal.
What priorities do you set for a debate on party identity/personality? As a party, how would you define SYRIZA on the axis of political geography?
SYRIZA – PS is for me non-negotiable in the space of the Left. And indeed of the Left that wants to be the protagonist in the political arena, to claim the helm of the country and governance. And not of a Left that will sweep under the carpet its responsibilities and obligations towards the world it represents by referring to the time when “conditions will mature” or the Second Coming. With me in its leadership, SYRIZA – PS will continue and with more intensity will politicize alongside and in favor of the interests of the world of work, the affected small and medium entrepreneurship, the small and medium farmers and the youth. And it will do it being an open to the world, democratic and collectively fighting party of the ruling Left!
Are constitutional changes needed for the election of the president of SYRIZA?
The process of electing the president of the party is a modern process that has been implemented successfully and in an open and massive manner in the two previous times he was elected president. We expect the same to happen now. We cannot go behind this model, even if there are concerns from various quarters about its effectiveness. And the candidate presidents must respect the statutory provisions as a whole and not as they see fit. But in general, SYRIZA-PS needs changes in its operation and statutes. Some of them have already been voted on in previous congresses and have not yet been implemented (eg the regional organization of the party, which also needs improvements). The grassroots elected president must act as an equal among equals, not favor factionalism and the creation of mechanisms. Finally, to respect the decisions of the collective bodies. We definitely need to adopt digital ways of working and other good ideas, which I have mentioned both publicly and in party bodies.
Will you contribute to the reconstruction of the progressive space? Beyond re-connecting with social forces, are you in favor of electoral collaborations with centre-left and social democratic parties? Opposite the extreme right you are in favor of the fronts, such as e.g. the New Popular Front in France?
First of all, to explain, the New Popular Front in France was formed mainly against neoliberalism and its political representatives, namely the extreme right, the Right and Macron. The reaction of Macron, who did not give a governing mandate to the majority Popular Front, is eloquent and telling. For the rest, yes, I am in favor of fronts and collaborations, but with the condition that I state at every opportunity: that is, of political and programmatic convergence in a widely necessary and popularly understood program of changes and ruptures that will rally the majority of the people. A program of tangible redistribution of resources in favor of the above strata, cancellation of a series of memorandum laws, taking under public control strategic structures of the economy (PPC, a refinery, a systemic bank, etc.), brave reconstruction of the welfare state, transfer of licensing powers to self-government, changes in the Judiciary, etc.
