Debate Over Deaths from Coronavirus Vaccination in Switzerland: Federal Statistics Office Reports 19 Deaths, While Swissmedic Disagrees

Death from a corona vaccination is a controversial topic. There is also disagreement at the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) and the drug approval authority Swissmedic. On Monday, the FSO published the cause of death statistics for 2021. Of the more than 71,000 people who died, 19 were due to the Covid vaccination, it said.

In all cases, confirmation was obtained from the doctors that the cause of death was not a concomitant cause, but that the vaccination was confirmed as the cause of death. That’s what Rolf Weitkunat, epidemiologist at the federal government, says to SRF.

The Swissmedic approval authority disagrees. So far, not a single death has been documented as a result of the vaccination. «Swissmedic is looking for a possible causal connection. To achieve this goal, we are requesting all available documents,” says Christoph Küng, Head of Drug Safety at Swissmedic. Questions were often asked to the family doctor or other doctors in order to be able to understand the medical history of the deceased person.

Overall, Swissmedic took a closer look at over 200 cases because there was a suspicion of a connection between the death and the vaccination. Also included are the 19 deaths caused by corona vaccination. Küng defended that there was no autopsy report, which is important for the analysis SRF: «Where we already have enough information to assess the case, we can even do without the autopsy. And it must also be said that autopsies do not always come to a conclusive conclusion.”

Despite numerous studies that have been carried out, in which the data from the autopsy were also available, almost no deaths that can actually be attributed to the vaccination have so far been proven, according to SRF. However, a possible connection could never be ruled out in many studies.
