Heated discussions are just as much a part of Markus Lanz’s ZDF talk show as one or two politicians in large groups. In the episode on Wednesday evening (September 20th), the presenter only had two guests in the studio, and the topic had little to do with politics: football.
It quickly became clear that the current personnel policy of the German Football Association (DFB) and the new football power of Saudi Arabia could be just as hotly debated.
Markus Lanz: Criticism of Ronaldo and Co.
Together with the sports journalist Philipp Köster and the Islamic scholar Sebastian Sons, Markus Lanz first debates about German football, but then quickly comes to the current trend that many top European footballers are moving to clubs in Saudi Arabia.
While Cristiano Ronaldo justifies his decision by saying that he has achieved everything in Europe and is looking for a new challenge, it is clear to Markus Lanz’s group that it is actually all about the money. This is fundamentally legitimate for “11 Friends” editor-in-chief Köster – but not for everyone.
“To be honest, it disgusts me when you have older athletes who are 31 or 32, who have already earned so much money in their lives…” Lanz interrupts at this point: “Cristiano Ronaldo is probably a billionaire, right?” Köster confirms: “He’s a billionaire and he still says: ‘Hey, I’ll take it again. I don’t care what league I play in, what it does to my reputation, whether it affects my integrity as an athlete, I just take it with me. And it’s the same with Neymar…”

Markus Lanz: “In the end, everything in this system revolves around money”
During the course of the program, Islamic scholar Sons points out that it is not just the individual footballers that can be bought, but the entire system of the sports world, especially football. In this country too – despite all the football culture – things wouldn’t be any better, Lanz summarizes: “In the end, everything in this system revolves around money.”

However, expert Köster immediately contradicts: “So I would be careful. Of course there are a lot of people who immediately run after bundles of dollars being waved around, but there are also a lot of people who say: ‘No, it doesn’t work that way’.” However, he admits: “Arrogance doesn’t suit us, that’s for sure.”
