Debate Language: Indonesian vs. English – A Proposal Disagreement

Jakarta

Chairman of the Prabowo-Gibran Regional Campaign Team (TKD) West Sumatra (Sumbar), Other Rosiade, proposed that the presidential and vice presidential debates should be used in English. Spokesperson for the National Winning Team (TPN) Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud Md, Sunanto or Cak Nanto, emphasized that his party did not agree with the proposal.

“This is not a debate abroad. This is a debate in Indonesia, consumed by Indonesians and the Indonesian people, not everyone can understand,” said Cak Nanto when contacted, Wednesday (6/12/2023).

Cak Nanto emphasized that the presidential election debate forum aims to convey the vision, mission and thoughts to all Indonesian people. According to him, the presidential and vice presidential debates are not a place to compete in language skills.

“The point of the debate is how to educate the Indonesian people. So it’s not a matter of being good at language but the substance of the debate, the presentation being understood by the Indonesian people,” he said.

This PDIP cadre emphasized that his party is not afraid to debate using foreign languages. However, he reiterated that the substance of the presidential and vice presidential debates was to convey the vision and mission of each candidate pair to the public.

“It’s not that we are afraid of debating in English, let alone professors, right, presidential and vice presidential candidates. This means, actually, what is desired from the substance of the debate that is raised, and the debate is to convey the vision and mission and can be understood and can be interpreted by the public so that it is intelligent and the public can control long term,” he said.

“I would encourage you to continue using Indonesian because the main substance target is to convey understanding to the public, to the general public to know our vision and mission,” he continued.

Proposed Debate Using English

Previously, Andre Rosiade proposed that the presidential and vice presidential debates should be in English. Andre said that the selected candidate must have skills in international relations.

“We emphasize that we are not afraid of facing the presidential and vice presidential debate, whatever the KPU’s decision, we even propose that the debate be held in English,” said Andre in his statement, Monday (4/12).

Andre Rosiade then explained his reasons for this proposal. He said the President and Vice President-elect must master geopolitical issues and be competent in international relations.

Andre emphasized that the Prabowo-Gibran pair was ready to face the debate. They are also ready to face all debate formats, including in English.

“So we propose that the debate be held in English, whether for presidential or vice presidential candidates, combined or individually, we are ready. This is also to dispel narratives that say we are not ready to debate. We are ready in any format, even in language England,” he said.
