Debate. For or against the removal of departments?

In this year of departmental and regional elections, the question of a possible suppression of the departments is coming back to the fore.

The question of the elimination of departments was notably raised by LREM deputy Florian Bachelier which proposed to suppress the Breton departments to create an assembly of Brittany.

The objective of such a measure? Simplify the French administrative mille-feuille and reduce public spending by removing an institutional level.

Response from detractors: this territorial reform would generate many costs (linked to practical issues of moves, changes of addresses, signs, etc.) and it would eliminate public service positions. The abolition of the departmental council also raises questions of a democratic nature, with departmental elected representatives acting as a relay for citizens at their level. Above all, what will happen to all the skills exercised by the departments? Remember that these decentralized communities are responsible for many social actions (social assistance to children, PMI management of problems related to the elderly and disabled), the maintenance of colleges, departmental roads …

And you, are you for or against the elimination of departments?

Are you attached to your department? or do you think the departments are too expensive and outdated?
