Debate about high-rise buildings in Cologne – Rhineland – News

An investor is currently looking to replace his office building on Friesenplatz with a new building with a height of up to 99 meters. The intense debate about it in politics meant that the plan was first taken off the agenda of urban planning politicians. The city administration could imagine up to 67 meters, but the height concept of the city foresees only 22 meters 50 at this point.

Other projects, such as the planned 145-meter-high insurance company on the banks of the Rhine, a high-rise apartment building on the television tower or the massive new building on Rudolfplatz are intensifying the discussion about the height concept in Cologne.

Determination is not binding

Since 2007 this level has been exceeded more than twenty times in Cologne. Approved by politicians and the city administration. Two years earlier, the city council had decided on the height concept, which should actually prevent too high buildings.

After the discussion in 2005 about planned high-rise buildings in Deutz, a threat to the world cultural heritage status for the cathedral should be ruled out. Because there are always debates about it, the city administration is working on a new version of the height concept.
