DEB is thinking about the opening match in the football arena for the 2027 World Cup

Krefeld – At the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championship, there may again be an opening match in a football arena in Germany.

“We will apply with two arenas. Also, maybe with a football stadium for the opening match,” said German Ice Hockey Association (DEB) president Peter Merten on the sidelines of the German Cup in Krefeld.

In 2010, the DEB caused a stir at the penultimate home World Cup with the then world record game against Schalke. 77,803 spectators attended the first game against the USA (2-1 after extra time).

The 2027 World Cup will be awarded in Finland next May. Current German competitors are Norway and Kazakhstan. By the end of the application on January 10, 2023, the DEB wants to decide with which localities it will participate in the tender. Düsseldorf, Cologne, Krefeld, Berlin, Mannheim and Munich have applied as ice hockey arenas. “We will make a short-term decision there,” Merten said.
