Deaths pass 45,000; Christian Atsu’s body has been recovered

Istanbul ∙ The body of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu (31), who went missing in the earthquake that occurred on the 6th of this month in Turkey and Syria, has been found. Rescue workers recovered the body from the rubble of a collapsed 12-story apartment building in Antioquia, Hatay Province, Turkey. The total death toll from the earthquake has crossed 45,000. 39,672 died in Turkey; 5,800 in Syria.

The club’s sporting director, Tanner Sautt, has yet to be located. Atsu played for English Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle United and was an attacking midfielder for Turkish club Hatayspor. The body will be taken to Ghana.

Samir Muhammad Akar (49), his wife Ragda (40) and their son (12) were rescued on the 13th after the earthquake hit another apartment in Antioch. The son later died in hospital. Hatay is one of the most earthquake-damaged areas in Turkey.
