Globally, the number of daily deaths linked to Covid-19 has started to grow again this week (6,905 per day, + 2%)

After two months of decline, the Covid-19 pandemic has become more virulent this week in the world, due to a deterioration in the health situation in Europe and the United States.

With 410,654 contaminations recorded daily this week (according to a report closed on Thursday, October 21), the indicator has risen slightly globally (+ 2% compared to the previous week), with however very contrasting situations depending on the region. .

The pandemic, which had been on the decline since the end of August, has regained ground especially in Europe in countries where vaccination is less advanced, but also in the United Kingdom which lifted almost all restrictions this summer.

Deaths are on the rise

Globally, the number of daily deaths has started to grow again (6,905 per day, + 2%), inflated by a 10% increase in deaths in Europe and 9% in the United States / Canada area. They fell sharply in Asia (-17%).

The United States has the highest number of daily deaths, 1,703 per day this week, ahead of Russia (1,011), where the Kremlin on Friday (October 22) admitted the failure of its vaccination campaign, and Romania (389 ).

Regarding the number of contaminations for the week, the situation worsened further in Europe, with a surge of 16% of the cases listed, and the number of cases started to rise again in the Middle East (+ 2% ).

In the other regions, contaminations continued to decline: -16% of cases in Asia, -13% in Africa, -13% in the United States / Canada zone and -4% in the Latin America / Caribbean zone.

According to the WHO, the real number of Covid-19 contaminations in Africa is seven times higher than the official figures, which do not take into account subjects not detected, for lack of tests.

The United States remains by far the country with the highest number of new infections in absolute terms this week (75,442 daily cases, -13%), ahead of the United Kingdom (46,255, + 19%) and Russia (34,026, + 17%).

As a proportion of the population, excluding micro-states, the country with the most new cases this week remains Latvia (846 per 100,000 inhabitants) ahead of Georgia (771) and Lithuania (686).

Accelerations in Syria

Syria is the country where the epidemic is accelerating the most (+ 153%, 1,459 new cases per day), among the countries having recorded at least 1,000 daily infections during the past week.

Behind this Middle Eastern country, the strongest accelerations of the week were mainly in European countries, in the Czech Republic (+ 95%, 2,053 new cases per day), in Hungary (+ 80%, 1,344 ) and Poland (+ 78%, 3,592).

The Czech government on Wednesday announced a tightening of health controls and restrictions in response to the upsurge.

Conversely, Cuba (-38%, 1,840) is the country with the strongest decline this week, ahead of the Philippines (-36%, 5,983), Guatemala (-28%, 1,022), Myanmar (-27%, 1,038) and Mexico (-25%, 3,997).
